COMPASSION & INCLUSION AMONG OUR STAFF

Providing opportunity and resources to each Sunshine School staff member.

A couple of years ago, a young man applied to Sunshine School for a job as our Bus Aide. He had never had a job and had recently graduated from high school. The Bus Aide position was a good entry level job, so we hired him.

As we got to know him, we discovered he had a learning disability which limited his reading and writing abilities. That, plus his lack of job experience, made work challenging. In any other work setting, it is probable that his job would be in jeopardy. At Sunshine School, his supervisors and co-workers took him under their collective wing and began mentoring him. He started to develop good work habits and grew in confidence, and along the way, accommodations were made to address barriers that may have hindered his successful employment.

He dreamed of getting a driver’s license, buying a truck, and moving into a job with opportunities for increased pay. Slowly but surely, his dream became a reality. Much credit goes to the supervisors and co-workers who included and encouraged him.

At Sunshine School, we practice compassion and inclusion to celebrate and connect with our employees and clients through shared achievements and experiences while ensuring everyone has an opportunity to thrive and succeed.

When he left for a new job, we were sad to see him leave Sunshine, but proud of his success and grateful we could help him along the way.
